Volvo will soon welcome two new additional engine options, the T3 and T4, to its 2011 S60 sedan and V60 estate range of models. The pair of 1.6-liter four-cylinder GTDi gasoline units employ both turbocharging and direct injection technology for improved fuel efficiency without sacrificing performance. Furthermore, the two engines come equipped with Volvo's Start/Stop tech (manual gearbox models only) as standard.
The 1.6 GTDi T3 engine produces an output of 150HP and a peak torque of 240Nm (177 lbs-ft). The more potent T4 variant delivers 180-horsepower at 5,500 rpm and the same amount of torque (240Nm) from 1,600 rpm all the way up to 5,000 rpm. However, the T4 features an automatic on-demand overboost function that can provide 270 Nm (199 lbs-ft) of torque.
"Small, high-performance GTDi engines are a part of our bid to get more energy out of smaller engines" says Magnus Jonsson, Senior Vice President Product Development at Volvo Cars.
"We estimate reductions in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions in the region of twenty percent compared with a conventional petrol engine with larger displacement and similar performance." Jonsson added
The 1.6 GTDi T3 and T4 engines will be available with a six speed manual gearbox as standard, while Volvo's automatic six-speed Powershift transmission will be optional on the T4.
Volvo said both the T3 and T3 variants of the 1.6 GTDi will be offered on the S60 and V60 models later this year.
