Tokyo '09: Daihatsu's Pint-Sized Basket Concept

Seen by many as a modern-day Fiat 500 Jolli with a Japanese twist in it, the Basket is one of four new concept models unveiled by Daihatsu at the Tokyo Motor Show. The 3,395 mm long canvas-top Basket is based on the JDM Mira matching a 600cc 3-cylinder gasoline engine to a four-wheel drive system. Seating up to four people, the Basket's rear seats can be folded down turning the car into a miniature pick-up with a completely flat bed. Live shots after the break.

Tokyo '09: Daihatsu Deca Deca Mini MPV Concept

Making its world premiere at Daihatsu's Tokyo Motor Show stand alongside the Basket and e:S concept models is the Deca Deca. Measuring just 3,395mm (133.5-in.) in length, the odd-looking, boxy shaped mini MPV features a pair of pillar-less fold out doors on the passenger's side while the vehicle's simplistic interior is distinguished by the slim fold-away seats that can be arranged in numerous ways either to perform work inside the car or to increase the cargo area.

The Deca Deca is motivated by a three-cylinder turbocharged engine that drives the front wheels through a CVT.

Daihatsu Basket Concept Heads to Tokyo Motor Show

Bearing a resemblance or two to popular European golf-cart-like canvas top minis of the 60s and 70s such as the MINI Moke, Citroen Mehari and Fiat 500 Jolli, the Basket is a concept model from Daihatsu and it will make its world premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show at the end of October. The pint-size four-seater features a targa-like removable hardtop roof over the front seats and a removable canvas top over the rear seats. More pictures after the jump.

Tokyo '09: Daihatsu Previews e:S Concept Mini

This is the Daihatsu e:S, one of the many concept cars that the Japanese automaker is planning to exhibit at this month' 41st Tokyo Motor Show. Even though Daihatsu describes the e:S as a design study, the 3,100mm long micro car that rides on a 2,175mm wheelbase and is based on a shortened platform of one of the firm's current models, practically looks production ready.Daihatsu said that despite the ultra compact exterior dimensions, the e:S can accommodate four adult passengers.

According to the company, the use of slim, lightweight seats and the replacement of many materials with lighter versions limits the total vehicle weight to 700kg or 1,545 pounds.

The e:S is powered by a conventional gasoline engine fitted with a combustion control system that has been developed by Daihatsu as well as with a start-stop system. More details are to be released at the Tokyo Show.

Daihatsu Mud Master-C: 2007 Tokyo Show Preview

Toyota’s Daihatsu Motors will take the wraps off a mini van concept small enough to fit in the back seat of a Chevy Avalanche at this year’s Tokyo Show. Dubbed Mud Master-C (how do they come up with these names?), the miniscule van looks production ready but don’t get your hopes up to see it on either side of the Atlantic. To our misfortune, there’s not much information surrounding the Mud Master-C apart from a poorly translated teaser press release that the Japanese carmaker issued late last night. You can check it out right after the jump. -Continued

Frankfurt Show: Daihatsu OFC 1 Roadster

Oh cool, I wonder if it’s available in adult sizes… More of a toy than a car, Daihatsu’s second mini concept also failed to impress us though we suspect that female visitors probably found it cute. Equipped with a turbocharged, 3-cylinder 0,6-litre petrol engine that delivers 63 Hp the OFC 1 features a 3-piece electromotive roof that neatly folds in the trunk (...) in less than 10 sec. -Press release and image gallery after the jump

Press Release: Daihatsu OFC 1

Introducing a concept model that shows the future shape of an open sports car, conceived by Daihatsu as a car for adults who want to feel the wind as they drive.

The OFC-1 expresses the feel of a liberating, transparent canopy cockpit, and the familiarity of a flowing, smooth teardrop silhouette. Moreover, a glass top with liquid crystal sunshade used for the electromotive canopy-top open roof offers a free and liberating open-air feeling, regardless of the weather.

The 3-piece electromotive open roof completes operation in less than ten seconds and preserves independent trunk space even when the roof is open to improve the convenience of compact convertibles and allow enough trunk storage space for two adults to take an overnight trip.

In addition, a rear spoiler melded into the body, plus the 17-inch alloy wheels, express powerful running performance.

The interior is an expression of the sports mind compressed into a compact space. In addition to the expression of a mechanical image function in the meter center cluster, the high-contrast interior color arrangement serves to orchestrate a progressive, high-quality and sporty interior space.

For running performance, the Powertrain technology combines a high-performance turbo engine together with CVT with 7-speed paddle shift to achieve the highest level of both fuel consumption performance and environmental performance for vehicles in its class.

To commensurate with the underside of a sports car, the vehicle is equipped with 4 wheel disc brakes, electronic modulated suspension and stabilizers which improves roll stiffness thus producing a high performing spinning system together with the adoption of the 165/50R17 sport tyres.

Frankfurt Show: Daihatsu HSC Concept

Was ist dieses? Oh, dieses ist das Daihatsu HSC Konzept, ein zukünftiges kleines Autokonzept. What did you think; that we’d travel all the way to Frankfurt for a whopping 24-hours and we wouldn’t pick up a word or two… Sadly, we can’t say what we want about Daihatu’s mini concept in German so we’ll just tell you in unadorned English; unbelievably boring and completely emotionless. You could patch any automotive badge on this egg-styled bucket on wheels and no one would ever notice the difference. Sorry Daihatsu, we’ll pass on this one. -Press release and image gallery after the jump

Press Release: Daihatsu HSC

Daihatsu proposes a next-generation small car concept that is gentle to the Earth and its people, for all those people who want to choose a car that is actively kind to the environment. The HSC, or Heart & Smile Mover, is a proposal for a new sedan style based on ease of use and safety design that utilizes practical technologies to achieve both excellent fuel consumption performance and space to seat four adults comfortably.

While maintaining space that accommodates four people in comfort, it achieves a low CD value of 0.28 that contributes to improved fuel consumption through a sleek design that makes use of a wing-shaped cabin cross-section and a catamaran-like underbody that extends past the wheels to reach all along the body. At the same time, engine heat is exhausted out of the front wheel disc, to ensure that a thorough aerodynamic control design is maintained.

The car uses a flat floor and floating image long-slide seat. And with satellite switches, operating systems concentrated on a floor control tower, and a liquid crystal monitor meter, it offers all-new information displays.

Characteristics

  • -Use of double doors through elimination of the B pillar, and of flat floors, for a space that is easy to get in and out of.
  • -4.1L/100km fuel consumption is achieved through an efficient Power Unit combining factors including reduced friction, improved fuel combustibility and increased compression ratio together with CVT, Idle Stop System and aerodynamic control design with CD value of 0.28.
  • -Lightweight, safe frame, with side and back monitors plus 11-inch large monitor to reduce dead spots.
  • - Offers comfortable habitability for 4 adults while also achieving advanced aerodynamic performance.
