Maserati MC12 Sets New Nurburgring Lap Record at 7:24.29

Maserati MC12 NurburgringContinuing the never-ending 'I'm faster than you' game, Maserati has announced that its Ferrari Enzo-derived MC12 supercar has set a new production car record on the Nurburgring race track as it managed to lap the 12.8 mile long circuit in just 7:24.29.

What's more intriguing however is the fact that the Maserati MC12 belongs to one lucky son of a gun who also owns -get this- a Ferrari Enzo, a Koenigsegg CCX, a Pagani Zonda F Clubsport and a Porsche Carrera GT. The unnamed owner brought all five supercars to the 'Ring to have them tested by American Le Mans Series racer Marc Basseng while EVO magazine was on hand to record the results. -Continued

Maserati MC12 NurburgringDespite being the most powerful supercar of the bunch, the 901HP Koenigsegg CCX finished last in this high-end comparo completing a full lap in 7:33.6. Next up was the Porsche Carrera GT, with the lap in 7:28.71 while third quickest was the Enzo Ferrari, with an impressive 7:25.21. The Pagani Zonda F Roadster finished second with a lap time of just 7:24.65.

Just to set things straight, we must note that the brutal 2009 Dodge Viper ACR holds the unofficial production car record on the famed German race track as according to Motortrend, on August 18, 2008, FIA World Touring Car Championship (WTCC) driver Tom Coronel managed to turn the ‘Ring in his fourth attempt in a remarkable 7:22.10 -see details here. Oddly enough, Dodge has yet to release an official statement on the Viper ACR's awesome accomplishment.

Street-Legal Maserati MC12 Corsa for Sale

To discover any of the 12 examples of the track-ready Maserati MC12 Corsa that were ever built up for sale is an extremely rare occasion, but to discover one that has been modified for road use is like finding a needle in a haystack!

And if a German street homologation isn’t enough to make this Italian thoroughbred special, the Maserati MC12 Corsa presented here is the first of the series (serial number #01). The specific Maserati MC12 Corsa is up for sale by UK specialist Coys with the auction set to take place in Monaco on Saturday, May 10, 2008.

Unveiled in 2006, the MC12 Corsa was developed from the MC12 GT1 type which won the 2005 FIA GT Manufacturers Cup. It was designed as a race car to be driven by private owners during test sessions - or exhibition activities organized by Maserati. Both vehicles were based on the underpinnings of the Ferrari Enzo. -Continued

The MC12 Corsa is equipped with a 6-liter V12 engine producing 755 HP at 8,000 RPM and it weighs a mere 1,150 kg or 2535 lbs. It has a top speed of 330 Km/h or 205 mph and it is capable of accelerating from 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) in just 6.4 seconds.

According to Coys, in order to get the German homologation for street use, the Italian supercar received a series of modifications including the fitting of a ventilator system for cooling, a catalytic converter and silencer, an electronically controlled exhaust valve system, a fuel evaporation system with carbon filter, and a data log system. In addition, the fuel system has been adapted for use with petrol pumps.

In terms of bodywork, the fender has been adapted to cater for 19" tyres, and the car has been fitted with indicator lights and a license plate. The chassis has also been raised to increase the ground clearance of the car, the compression rods, dampers and springs have all been changed, and an air jack has been fitted.

Interior modifications include the seats, door and roof being upholstered in Alcantara, plus the addition of a handbrake, hazard warning lights, storage compartments, an interior lamp, a trip meter, a ventilation system and central locking.
