Electric Porsche 928 Sheds 400 Pounds and Three Gears to Make One Man Happy

Jeff McCabe owns a Porsche 928. However, he wanted an electric Porsche 928 in the vein of the Tesla Roadster that he can't afford. So here's what Jeff did: he removed "over 1,700 lbs" of dead weight by eliminating a bunch of useless stuff like the standard engine, transmission (actually just 1st, 4th, and 5th gears), and a bunch of electronics, pop-up headlights, and so on.

He also replaced the wheels and brakes with lighter units and made sure to ace that heavy glass. Once that 1,700 pounds was in the trash, he added 1,300 pounds in the form of 750 lithium iron-phosphate cells (he originally used lead acid batteries).

The result is a car that can go for 115+ miles before it needs a recharge (versus the ~45 from the lead acid units) and can hit 85 miles per hour (137km/h). Too bad it can't do 88. For some info straight from the owner of the car, check out the vid below. Anyone interested in providing him with a CVT?

Design Study for a Porsche 928 Coupe Concept based on the Panamera

Even before the official presentation of the new Panamera, there had been plenty of talk about a coupe model based on the sports saloon that could serve as a spiritual successor to the much-missed 928 and more importantly, give Porsche a new range-topping GT model to compete head-to-head with the likes of Ferrari's 599 GTB and Aston Martin's DB9.

And while we're still in the dark about Porsche's future plans especially after the VW Group's takeover, a member of the Teamspeed forums decided to use his photoshop skills to make a grand touring coupe model out of the Panamera with styling cues that hark back to the original 928.

Feel free to leave your thoughts on the 'chop as well as on the Panamera Coupe subject in general in the comment section below.

One Messed Up Porsche "959" Speedster

A 1977 Porsche 911 Convertible with the front end of a 928, the rear of a 959 and the sides of a Carrera GT (or at least parts that imitate those cars)? Welcome to the "sinful" world of customized sports cars. If your stomach is up to it, there's more beauty to found in the modded Porsche's two-tone interior.

We find it hard to believe that any of you will actually be interested in the Porsche, but just in case, the car is for sale on Craigslist in Portland for a mere $12,995.

Spotted: Porsche 928 GTS Pickup Truck

The long-gone and much missed Porsche 928 GTS with its big macho V8 engine is one of our most favorite gran-turismo coupes of the past two decades or so. That said, we find the conversion of any 928 into a mullet-loving pickup truck, pointless and in some cases such as Harry Thoma's six-wheeler 928 GTS truck that we showed you in a previous post, even repulsive. This particular small-bed pickup-truck version of the 928 GTS was snapped on the road (we're guessing somewhere in Denmark) by a reader of the Autogespot forums.

Mullet County: Porsche 928 with Blown Chevy V8

Now here's a Mad Max enthusiast's wet dream... and a Porsche-file's nightmare. As its name clearly suggests, the CHEPORSCHE is a 1984 Porsche 928 that has been outfitted with a blown 454 Chevy V8 engine. In true Texan style, the owner of the car has also raised the 928 several inches from the ground. But if you thought the exterior is tacky, wait until you get a look of the GT's cabin... In the extremely rare case that someone finds this heavily abused Porsche attractive, it is up for sale on eBay for $5,999.

Video: Porsche 928 GTS 6-Wheeler Pick-Up Truck

Wondering why someone would go into all that trouble to create a three-axle, 6-wheeler, pick-up truck version of a Porsche 928 GTS? We can’t think of an answer and even if we did, we’re sure we wouldn’t convince anyone. Nevertheless, for his own personal reasons, Harry Thoma decided to stretch a 928 GTS, add a third axle and a pick-up bed. While he was at it, Thoma also increased the displacement of the original 928’s 5.4-liter V8 engine to 6.1-liters, raising output from 350 to 390 HP. -Video after the jump

Porsche 928 With Corvette V8 Engine

Not so sure of what to make of this conversion –sacrilege or just a way to own a Porsche you can actually afford to pay for engine repairs. We’ll let you decide for yourselves. Available for sale on eBay (current bid $6,995), the 1978 Porsche 928 is fitted with a Chevrolet Corvette L82 350 V8 engine, that according to its buyer, “weighs less than original Porsche engine, it’s faster and it handles better than original with no big repair bills”. -More pics after the jump

Pic of the Day: Porsche 928 Kitsch Up Truck

During their daily quest for weird pick ups -aka El Caminos, our friends over at Jalopnik discovered this one of a kind -I hope, 928 Pick up that was put up, and eventually sold, on E-Bay. Now tell me why the heck would someone want to destroy a Porsche 928 and more importantly, why would someone want to buy a 928 transformed into a pick up truck?

Speaking of which did you know that the 928 won the 1978 Car of the Year award being the only car of its kind to have accomplished this feat? Via: Jalopnik
