Fiat 500 to enter Guinness Book of Records

Fiat's classic mini, the 500, a direct descendant of which is set to be unveiled in mid 2007, has just qualified for The Guinness Book of Records, as, earlier this month, more than 750 “Cinquecentisti” (Cinquecento means 500 in Italian) created the world’s longest one model traffic ‘jam’ at over three kilometres in length!

More than 5000 enthusiasts gathered at Garlenda in Italy for the 23rd International Fiat 500 Owners Meeting, to watch 500 Fiat 500 cars create the largest 500 insignia in the world on the Dei Fiori racecourse at Villanova d’Albenga. Then, as the ‘convoy’ headed off towards Casanova Lerrone, it exceeded the two miles in length required to beat the record.

But, the “Cinquecentisti” plan to take this further as next year is the 50th anniversary of the Fiat 500, and it will also be the eve of the new Fiat 500 launch, so the Fiat 500 Club Italia, organisers of the event, are calling on Fiat 500 owners and fans from around the world to start making preparations to travel to Italy for the biggest Fiat 500 event in history.

Electric powered MINI QED Concept with 640 Hp!

309,9
Kgm of tourque, 0-100 km/h (62mph) in just 4,5 seconds, 240 Km/h top speed and 1.500 Km autonomy

Sounds perfect don’t you agree? PML’s Mini concept was unveiled at the British Motor Show this week and it features 4 electric powered motors (one for each wheel) that generate a stunning 640 Hp (160 Hp each). More astonishing is the torque that sums up to a total of…3.000 NM or 308,9 Kgm !!!

According to PML, the all wheel drive electric powered mini needs a mere 4,5 sec (!) to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h (62mp/h) while it’s top speed reaches 240 km/h (149 mph). PML say’s that athough a production model would be a bit slower (0-100 km/h in 6 seconds) the impressive 1.500 km (932 miles) autonomy will be retained.

Another real cool thing is the fact that the car wears a 250 cc 2 stroke petrol engine attached with a generator that supplies power to the batteries. As the battery level reduces, the rear mounted engine/generator starts to automatically top up the battery. So when you arrive at your destination you simply park the vehicle knowing that when you return the battery will be replenished!

Although the project wasn’t supported by BMW (BMW UK Ltd requested that PML mention that they have no involvement with the project and that such conversions invalidate warranty) PLM hope that a car maker will be interested in the technology.

I on the other hand hope PML can keep it’s promise concerning their systems hugely impressive specifications.

Video of a BMW 3-Series Drifting that Goes Terribly Wrong

This video just goes to show you that in the end, we are only human. A drift show with a BMW E30 3-Series spinning around like crazy “rolls” smoothly till the driver decides to open his door and “show off” a bit. Then he gets distracted -only for a fraction of a second, but that is enough to make everything go wrong.

Fiat Panda Attemps a Cross-Channel Swim!

Tomorrow morning (Friday 21 July) -weather permitting, at around 8.30am, , a new breed of nautical Panda will be clambering into the sea at Folkestone, Kent. Not merely to escape the heatwave that has hit the UK by cooling off in the water, but with every intention of reaching the French coast and then driving all the way home to Italy!

This Panda’s creator is Milan born Maurizio Zanisi, an independent former Iso Rivolta engineer, and his self-built Panda Terramare 4 is based on a Panda 4x4 chassis, but with an inflatable flotation belt, and waterjet propulsion driven off the rear axle.

Panda Terramare 4 is no stranger to water, and it has already been spotted frolicking in the great Italian lakes, (Como and Maggiore), the River Po, and the Mediterranean off Sardinia. Its longest sea journey to date has been a return trip from Naples to Capri – a journey of some 25 miles. The Channel, however, will be its greatest test to date.

Official: Volkswagen's new compact SUV named Tiguan

VW's forthcoming compact SUV that will be based on the mid-sized Golf has been christened Tiguan… As strange as it sounds, I think we should be happy with it considering the fact that it was chosen over these four names: Nanuk, Namib, Rockton and Samun...

Noticeably, Volkswagen followed a different path than usual, allowing the "baptism" to be made by 350.000 readers of AutoBild magazine (in 10 countries) and not by marketers.

As fot the car, Touareg's "little" SUV brother will be heavily based on the Concept A that we saw earlier this year (click picture bellow). According to VW officials, it will be manufactured in Wolfsburg, Germany and it will go on sale in early 2008.

Tesla Roadster EV Production Model

Coming in 2007, 100% electric powered, Lotus Designed, 0-60 mph in 4 seconds

Tesla Motors, a Silicon Valley startup company, which was founded in June 2003 by engineers Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning to create an efficient but nevertheless, sport electric car unveiled the Tesla Roadster production model which will go on sale in 2007.

Specifications: Underneath it’s sexy Lotus Elise inspired, body, the Roadster hides a powerful electric motor (185 KW) which promises to take it up 60 mph (96 km/h) from 0 in about 4 seconds while top speed is expected to exceed 130 mph (209 km/h). Despite its impressive performance, the 100% electric Tesla Roadster boasts a consumption that is equivalent to 135 mpg in a petrol car, which according to the company comes to 1 cent per mile. Range depends on driving style and conditions. On the EPA highway driving cycle is expected to reach 250 miles (402 km) on a single charge.

Available from 2007: Although prices haven’t been announced yet, Tesla say’s that for customers in Northern and Southern California, the cars will be available in the summer of 2007. Chicago will follow with a delivery date in the fall of 2007. The cars will then also be available in New York and Miami probably beginning in late 2007.

Developed, Designed & Assembled by Lotus: Components and subsystems for the car come from a variety of sources all over the world. Lotus Cars is assembling the Tesla Roadster under contract to Tesla Motors. Tesla Motors has also hired Lotus Engineering for certain design and engineering tasks. The Tesla Roadster style was developed in Lotus Engineering's design studio - Lotus Engineering won a design contest where several design firms submitted proposals. Lotus Engineering supplied the initial chassis which was significantly modified by Tesla Motors engineers. The company currently employs 80 people, including teams in California, the UK and Taiwan

Google & Pay-Pal: Tesla has managed to secure initial funding from prominent investors, such as PayPal co-founder Elon Musk, and Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.

Press Release Technical Information

The Tesla Roadster powertrain consists of four main parts: the battery pack (called Energy Storage System or ESS), motor, a 2 spped transmission, and the PEM (Power Electronics Module), none of which are “off-the-shelf” components. Rather, each includes innovations, both small and large, to support our mission of a high-performance car that’s gentle on the environment.

Energy Storage System (ESS): The Tesla Roadster’s “fuel tank” weighs in at about 1,000 pounds and delivers four to five times the energy-density stores of other batteries. Safe, light, durable, and recyclable, it represents the biggest innovation in the Tesla Roadster and is one of the largest and most advanced lithium-ion battery packs in the world. Why this matters to you, the driver, is that it frees you to drive farther than ever before in an EV, while enjoying the power of world-class performance. The design ensures optimum operating conditions which maximize the life of the cells, while offering high levels of safety.

The architecture provides excellent redundancy and tolerance against cell-to-cell manufacturing variations. The system uses commodity lithium ion cells which, thanks to high demand by the consumer electronics industry, has spurred development that drives costs down and performance up. Finally, recharge time is impressively quick, enabled by an onboard, high-power charging system.

The system addresses thermal balancing with a liquid cooling circuit. Multiple passive and active safety devices ensure safe operation over the wide range of driving environments and scenarios. An array of sensors and a dozen microcontrollers communicate with the vehicle to allow efficient use and management of the battery pack. Finally, the entire assembly is housed in a rugged enclosure, which protects the system from the harsh road environment while supporting the internal components.

Motor: The motor for a high-performance electric car requires a device that is simultaneously light, compact, and high in efficiency. The Tesla Roadster EV motor is just that. We accomplish this by starting with a well-optimized electromagnetic design and then using the lowest loss conductors and the highest quality magnetic steel possible.

The power of the motor is not only limited by how much power you put into it, but also by how fast it can be cooled, how hot it can operate, and how efficiently it runs. We addressed each of these in innovative ways. Our motor can operate continuously around 120°C, thanks to the array of air-cooling fins on our aluminum housing.

The rotor is made with a proprietary process that produces a low resistance “squirrel cage” with large end rings using oxygen free copper. This allows the rotor to develop high current flows, and torque, with low resistance losses. The use of a small air gap allows tight inductive coupling which, combined with low loss magnetic materials, enables the development of high torque at high rpm. Together, these factors allow us to induce large currents, even at high rpm, producing much flatter power and efficiency curves from approximately 2,000 rpm to 12,000 rpm.

The sum of all these features is a single motor with efficiencies of 85 to 95 percent, power output of up to 185 kW, and a small footprint that measures just 250 mm (diameter) by 350 mm (length).

Transmission: Inside the box, our transmission couples the simplicity and efficiency of a manual with the smarts and sophistication of an automatic. The Tesla Roadster has only two forward gears and either one will work for most of your driving. Unlike a manual transmission, the car will not stall if you have it in the wrong gear. Plus it puts you in control of the shifting to fine-tune your driving experience or to achieve the upper limits of acceleration and top speed. And because there is no clutch, you can quickly and easily start from a stop or shift gears on the freeway.

Power Electronics Module (PEM): You’ll see this very important part of the car every time you pop the trunk. It controls over 200 kW of electrical power during peak acceleration, enough power to illuminate 2,000 incandescent lightbulbs (or 10,000 compact fluorescents). The PEM performs several critical functions in the Tesla Roadster, including motor torque control, regenerative braking control, and charging.

When you shift gears or accelerate in the Tesla Roadster, the PEM translates your commands into precisely timed voltages that tell the propulsion motor to respond with the proper speed and direction of rotation.

Circuits within the PEM monitor temperatures, voltages, and currents for maximum or minimum limits by using a combination of hardware- and firmware-settable values. These circuits prevent damage to the PEM, ESS, or motor when a variance from nominal operating conditions is detected.

During normal operation, the PEM monitors things like the voltage delivered by the ESS, the speed of rotation of the propulsion motor, and temperatures of the motor and power electronics. Should you like to know these things yourself, simply glance at the on-board Vehicle Display System.

Diesel Driver Online Magazine

There’s a new kid on the block called “Diesel Driver”. Derived from the homonymous Internet forum the online magazine edition of Diesel Driver is dedicated specifically to the diesel market. It promises to give us up to the minute news, competitions etc. What can I say but wish them the best of luck.

Comments: “The aim of the magazine is to present what our members want to read, not what the editorial team wants them to read." said Editor John Stevens. "We aim to use leading edge technology to ensure that the content is customisable to our reader’s requirements but more importantly, as we started life as a forum, we are acutely aware of how important our reader population is to us and to that end we aim to have them involved throughout the magazine, from basic forum posts to road tests and interviews."

"Diesel engines have undergone huge development in the past 10 years and now represent almost 40% of new car sales in the UK alone, add that to the huge take-up of broadband Internet services throughout Europe and the potential to reach directly onto people’s desktops we believe that the Internet is the perfect vehicle for us to deliver our product to a large and diverse audience." added Ian Cowan, Director of Diesel Driver." History: When Top Gear gave birth to Fifth Gear

Each one has its own fans -personally, I love them both. Since I’ve been playing a lot of video clips from both shows, I thought I’d share with you a little bit of history about the creation of Fifth Gear and what Top Gear had to do with it.

According to Wikipedia, the story has it that following the departure of presenter and TV persona, Jeremy Clarkson, Top Gear’s show rating started to flop so in 2001 BBC decided to pull the plug from the show after a whopping 24 years! -Luckily for us this was only temporary.

Then, along came Channel 5 which wanted to buy the Top Gear name from the BBC, which refused, so they created the similarly branded Fifth Gear TV Show in an attempt to take on the banner and audience which had been shed from the BBC after the axing.

Several of Top Gear's ex-presenters, including Quentin Willson, Tiff Needell and Vicki Butler-Henderson were hired by Channel Five to create the new motoring show.

Interesting facts

·The original format consisted of an approximately 23 minute programme. The 8th season returned in the Autumn of 2005 in a longer format of 45 minutes, which is closer to the relaunched version of Top Gear which is 60 minutes long.

·Besides giving out a car each programme, Fifth Gear is distinguishable from the current Top Gear in that it is typically less outrageous and more of a straightforward motoring show.

·The current presenters of Fifth Gear are Jon Bentley, Vicki Butler-Henderson, Tiff Needell, Jason Plato and Tom Ford.

·In the United States, the show is broadcast on SPEED Channel. The edited version of the show is also shown on Discovery Real Time.
