All-New Kia Picanto Revealed Ahead of Geneva Salon Debut

Following the release of two teaser sketches in December, Kia today published real-life photos of its second generation Picanto city car, which is set to debut at this year’s Geneva Motor Show in March. The 2011 Picanto will be offered in two body styles and with four all-new engines.

Kia’s Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, said, “In profile, the new Picanto features significant sculpting and a very prominent rising character line. The result is a layering of light and shadow and this breaks up the height, giving the car a more sure-footed stance”.

Details are scarce right now, but the automaker claims the car has grown in length and has a longer wheelbase, which should improve interior space. Unlike the outgoing model which is available exclusively as a five-door hatchback, the new Picanto will be offered in both 5-door and 3-door body styles (at least in Europe).

The engine range will comprise of 1.0 and 1.2-liter gasoline engines, while Kia will also offer LPG, bi-fuel and flex-fuel variations, depending on local market requirements.

Kia has not given the exact timing of the car's arrival in European markets, but buyers should expect to see the new Picanto in showrooms in the second-half of the year.

2010 Kia Picanto - Morning Mini Receives Subtle Facelift

Together with the facelifted 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe, the Hyundai - Kia Group today also performed the South Korean market launch of the updated 2010 Kia Morning citycar, which is sold in most parts of the world as the Picanto. This is the second facelift for the Korean mini following a gentle massage in 2007. Once again, the styling changes aren't too radical with the most visible differences concerning the reshaped front and rear bumpers, new side skirts, revised tail light clusters and a slightly altered front grille.

Furthermore, for the Korean market, there's a new variant of the Picanto / Morning (pictured above) that boasts several unique styling cues such as the specific front bumper and chromed grille which is similar in design to the one found on the Soul crossover.

Kia's press release talks of minor revisions in the interior that include a new design for the three-spoke steering wheel and refreshed trim. The Picanto / Morning is offered with two engine options in Korea, an entry-level 1.0-liter LPI four pot with 67HP and an updated 1.0-liter gasoline engine with 72HP (8HP more than before).

  • - Refreshed, restyled and longer – new 2007 Kia Picanto to debut on 7 June
  • - Fresh colours, plus upgraded interior, audio equipment and power steering

(SEOUL) May 25, 2007 – Kia Motors Corporation has confirmed that the newly upgraded 2007 Kia Picanto will make its world premiere at the 34th Salon Internacional del Automovil in Barcelona, Spain on 7 June. Kia’s design teams in Korea and Europe have revisited the company’s smallest car, preserved its ‘young, sporty and friendly’ spirit, and evolved the new 2007 Picanto – a car with more glamorous looks, an upgraded interior and higher quality audio equipment.

Attractively refreshed and restyled to be ‘more rounded and intimate’, the 2007 Picanto is 40 mm longer, with an overall length of 3535 mm, featuring an extended, rounded nose and deeper, larger rear bumper. All-new panels are used for the bonnet, front wings, front bumper and rear bumper. The front and rear light clusters are new and follow the ‘rounded’ theme.

A new wider radiator grille, with black mesh background and twin horizontal chromed bars supporting the central Kia badge, is part of the evolving design process that is defining a new ‘Face of Kia’. The standard roof spoiler now extends across the full width of the car, while the wheelbase is unchanged at 2370 mm. Customers will be offered a choice of five new exciting, contemporary colours in a range of nine exterior colours.

“With nearly 400,000 exports since its introduction in 2004, the Picanto has not only opened the door to a segment where we previously had no presence but it has become one of the Kia line-up’s global best sellers,” commented Yong-Hwan Kim, Senior Executive Vice President & COO of Kia Motors Corporation. “We are confident that with its fresh new looks and upgraded equipment the Picanto will continue to appeal to the world’s A-segment customers and reach annual overseas sales in excess of 130,000 units over the next several years.”

Up front, the redesigned Korean mini gets a new set of headlights, a “Cee’d” styled grille, a new bumper and hood. In the rear, the F/L Picanto features new light-clusters and a slightly redesigned bumper. Inside, the 2008 Picanto has adopted various goodies from the Cee’d like the gauges with bright orange illumination, the 3spoke steering wheel along with a redesigned center console equipped with a new factory radio-CD and new button-wear all inspired from Cee’d’s (we know, you got the point).
