New Volkswagen Touran Spied

Wait a sec; wasn’t VW’s Golf V based compact minivan retouched just a few months ago? Well, yes but as Car magazine rightfully points out, Volkswagen is in a hurry to present a new generation of the car based on the platform and underpinnings of the sixth-generation Golf which will be introduced at the end of the year. The reason is that the fifth-generation Golf is an expensive car to be produced and VW execs want to make their most successful model along with all of its variants more cost-efficient.

Although the prototype Touran in the spy pics is heavily camouflaged, the new model is expected to carry styling elements from the Up concept as VW says it previews the company’s future design language. As for the engine range, don’t expect any surprises with the line-up including 1.4 and 1.8-liter turbocharged gasoline and 1.9 and 2.0-liter turbodiesel units. The new Touran will most probably make its market debut in mid-2009.
